Rudyard Kipling (1865 – 1936) – Victorian Secrets

“Kipling’s involvement with the Boer War in the following year bolstered his belief in the importance of Empire. He used his writing to promote a sense of national identity, and toured the country giving pro-war speeches. His views captured the mood of the time and he was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1907. His commitment to military action was severely challenged when his only son John went missing, presumed dead, on his first day of action in the Battle of Loos. John, who suffered from poor eyesight, was able to enlist only after Kipling used his influence, thus compounding his sense of guilt.”

“My Boy Jack” is a 1916 poem by Rudyard Kipling (https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rudyard_Kipling).[1] Kipling wrote it for Jack Cornwell (https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jack_Cornwell), the 16 year old youngest recipient of the Victoria Cross who stayed by his post on board ship during the battle of Jutland until he died. Kipling’s son John was never referred to as “Jack”[citation needed (https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Citation_needed)]. The poem echoes the grief of all parents who lost sons in the First World War. John Kipling was a 2nd Lt in the Irish Guards and disappeared in September 1915 during the Battle of Loos (https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Loos) in the First World War (https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/First_World_War). The poem was published as a prelude to a story in his book Sea Warfare written about the Battle of Jutland (https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Jutland) in 1916.[2] The imagery and theme is maritime in nature and as such it is about a generic nautical Jack (or Jack Tar (https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jack_Tar)), though emotionally affected by the death of Kipling’s son.
